Pros and cons of Champion of the Gods app for iPhone and iPad
Champion of the Gods app good for
Fun idea to be a Champion of the Gods, being a loyal servant or choose not to serve. Those are pretty much your choices, as the story tends to play out no matter what you choose and it can feel like the story is carrying on with no regard to your choices unless its to branch off towards an ending.
It wasnt as rewarding when you make your choices, as it carried that sense of "correct choice" throughout most of the game. There was a "right way" to play, so that felt a bit less immersive and shorter than it is (fair bit of pointless choices too).
Played through this several times still, just wish the choices were done better to be meaningful rather than road signs to the endings.
I was very satisfied with both the length of the game and the amount of choice I had. This game reminds me a lot of Choice of Broadsides. Although the underlying story is linear, theres a large amount of "flavor text"--instead of trying to fit several different choices into the same text, there was unique text for nearly every choice. I was particularly happy with how responsive the game is to your protagonists attributes--if you do something thats out-of-character with your personality, the game comments on it in a light-hearted way (for example, if my merciful character boasted about being brutal, their friend would laugh). There are a lot of neat little touches that make this game feel very polished.
Im a big fan of moral ambiguity, and the destiny vs. free will theme here really resonated with me. I only wish that there had been *more* ambiguity. Although the game does present both sides problems, it seems to treat one side as the "good" side more. No spoilers, but I wish there had been more options on how to handle the "villains" in the game.
I was also impressed with how many different stats there are, and how they all made sense and contributed to the choices.
On the downside, I dont think the consequences for failure in the game are serious enough. There are several battle/challenge sequences, where you have to make the right choice based on your characters strengths. But if you make the wrong choice, nothing really happens (with 1 or 2 major exceptions)--you get some disappointing flavor text, such as some nameless people died, but you suffer no consequences. Perhaps an injury tracker like in Choice of the Dragon wouldve been appropriate, so that your character becomes permanently injured if you fail too many times.
I think this is one of the higher quality CoG games on the App Store. I enjoyed the cast of characters and the mythological setting. I didnt really feel as though my personality traits or abilities came into play that often, but it may have just been hidden well. Definitely recommended if you like story games!
Some bad moments
I love this new game
Its written really well
And the pictures are great
Worth the $
I just had to go ahead and review this game because in the short time Ive had it Ive fallen in love!
Its short but not too short where it makes me bored easily. And its not an extremely long COG that makes me too scared to go back for achievements.
Also I love the options for the romances with the prince/princess! The fact that you can choose their personality is amazing and I wish it was in more COGs to be honest!
Another thing Id like to point out is the fact that if you get into a lesbian relationship (only tested the lesbian one so Im not sure about whether this shows up for gay relationships too) with the Princess, the story mentions how the nobles will offer their children up as surrogates essentially! I really enjoyed that little part because it really adds depth to it and makes it so its not just a story with interchangeable pronouns but with actual changes in dialogue based on sexuality!
Well this review is long enough so Im gonna end it here with one last thing: I would not complain if there was a sequel to this made
The story in writing or excellent, there are many paths you can take. It reminds me a little bit of Hercules. Definitely recommend to all CoG fans.
This is no joke my 45th download of a choice of game and I would say this definitely is in my top 5. I will admit that I am a little biased because I love this type of genre but there are tons of different choices and many different outcomes that makes this game amazing!!
This was a great game and definitely worth the money. Now all there is to do is hope that there is a sequel soon!!
I started playing this game at my partners recommendation and havent been able to put it down. The writing is fantastic and detailed with the write mix of story flavor and choices. I adore the fact you could play as a gay champion, it was incredibly validating and made the story that much touching for me. Thank you for creating such a fun filled game.
Off to play it again!
